Introducing Piedra Negra Wines!

March 29th 2017

Federal Merchants’ most recent wine addition hails from Mendoza, Argentina.

Francois Lurton, a 5thgeneration Bordeaux vigneron, began making wine in Argentina in 1992 and established Piedra Negra in 1996. Francois and his brother, Jacques, were drawn to the area due to the quality of the terroir, unique altitude and pure water source from the Andes Mountains. Andre Lurton, their Bordeaux vigneron father, likened the gravel soils to those of Pessc Leognan and the family knew they were on to something special.

Piedra Negra is exclusively distributed by Federal in New Zealand and features not only the Alta Colección Malbec, but also the Gran Malbec, a worldwide brenchmark of Malbec, and Chacayes, an ultra-premium wine from a single vineyard located 1100 metres above sea level. “Malbec is in double-digit growth in New Zealand grocery and Piedra Negra offers exceptional value in a beautiful package. The wines are also 100% organic, which is becoming more and more important to consumers, especially milennials” said Victoria Stark, Wine Brand Manager.
