This wine was crafted from fruit that was hand-picked when it reached an ideal balance between berry fruit flavour and acid structure. It was then lightly de-stemmed on arrival at the winery to retain as many whole berries as possible and pumped to open top fermenters. A cold soaking period on the skins was undertaken to extract fruit characters and colour and fermentation ensued naturally. Post ferment treatment was minimal and after pressing, the wine aged in French Barriques for 20 months.
The Awatere River Reserve is made in a traditional Burgundian manner. A hands-off approach has produced a full bodied wine, rich and ripe displaying dense dark berry and plum characters while still retaining the typical Marlborough vibrance and finesse. The classic fruit characters of this variety make it an immediately appealing wine, yet has medium to long term cellaring potential. Match with mushrooms, Pork loin, steak and barbequed Lamb chops.
