From its first production of 141 cases of 1995 Shiraz, Penny’s Hill has established a fine reputation for outstanding vineyards from which acclaimed estate wines have emerged.
Very much a part of the recent McLaren Vale landscape, the Penny’s Hill story commenced over twenty-five years ago. The brand message: “Proudly Australian. More so McLaren Vale.”
Winemaker Alexia Roberts crafts fine, full-bodied, fruit driven wines from premium estate-grown fruit from some of the best quality vineyards in the region. A meticulous approach every step of the way, from the narrow-planted, low yielding vineyards and throughout the winemaking process, Penny’s Hill wines deliver an ultimate balance of texture, complexity and interest, with quality well above price being the outcome sought.
Derived from the strong visual presence of ‘sold’ stickers applied to works of art in commercial galleries, Penny’s Hill ‘red dot’ packaging is now very much established, not only as the brand’s trademark but as a means of visually linking all aspects of the business.
Dating back to 1838, McLaren Vale was one of the first regions in South Australia to be planted to vines. The region has a Mediterranean climate experiencing winter dominant rainfall and warm, dry summers, that are tempered by the proximity of the Gulf St Vincent. A long summer/autumn ripening period ensures outstanding fruit ripeness, richness and balance and has produced wines of impressive value over the history of the region.Due to its unequivocally cool climate, Adelaide Hills is a proven region for sensational white grape quality from which the Penny’s Hill white wines hails. Within close proximity to McLaren Vale, higher altitude and cooler night time temperatures, ensure whites with natural acidity, varietal expression and freshness. We call these vineyards ‘estates of mates’.
From winning the region’s Best of Show and “Bushing King” crown in 2004, Penny’s Hill has won Australia’s Best Boutique Shiraz (2005 and 2006) and in 2005 was named Australia’s Best Boutique Wine. More recently Penny’s Hill “Cracking Black” Shiraz (2010) took out Best Full Bodied Red Wine at the Sydney international Wine Show and was runner-up for Best Wine of Show.
