A label by Waimea Estates, who are assisting local conservation groups in their efforts to protect the vulnerable and unique species. Produced to honour and help protect the Tuatara, the world’s last living link to the dinosaur, Spinyback wines offer exceptional value. A ‘living fossil’ and meaning ‘the spinybacked one’ in New Zealand’ indigenous Maori language, the Tuatara has been found only in New Zealand for the last 60 million years. Each purchase of Spinyback wine provides direct funding to assist local conservation efforts in the preservation and protection of this special last remaining ‘Sphenodontida’ species in dedicated sanctuaries.
The Bolitho family established Waimea Estates in 1993 when Trevor and Robyn Bolitho planted their first grapes on the Waimea Plains of Nelson, New Zealand. The first wine from these vines was produced in 1997 and was an immediate success, winning Trophy for best Sauvignon Blanc in the 1998 Winestate Awards. By 2006 we had planted our Hope, Packhouse, Colin’s and Lansdowne Road Vineyards and built a modern winery on site to support the rapid growth in wine production.
