Waimea’s Grüner Veltliner Takes out the top prize in Sydney

December 10th 2015

The initial results of the 2016 Sydney International Wine Competition were announced recently and Waimea Estates was delighted that three of their winestyles caught the eye of the judges.

This wine show is a little different in that the wines are judged twice – once in a formal setting and the second time judged with a dish created by the competition’s in-house chef so as to gauge the wine’s food-matching ability. Waimea Grüner Veltliner 2015 and Waimea Sauvignon Gris 2015 were both awarded Blue Gold Medals – placing them in the top 15% of the wine show’s 2000 entries. Waimea Gewurztraminer 2014 went one step further to be awarded a Blue Gold Medal plus a placing in the TOP 100 wines overall which places it in the top 5% of the show.

The Chairman of Judges, Kym Milne MW is allowed to choose his overall top wine alone and was very pleased with the final selection of wines that he tasted for this trophy - “an extremely high quality range of wines” Kym says, and has decided to award:

The Chairman of Judges perpetual trophy for a wine of outstanding quality - Waimea Gruner Veltliner 2015

Kym went on to say, “There is a lot of interest in alternative white varieties at present. Many of these alternative varieties produce more subtle, textured very food friendly wines as opposed to many of the traditional varieties with strong, distinctive varietal characters i.e. Sauvignon Blanc. This Waimea Grüner Veltliner fits that description perfectly. A very fresh, bright and lively white, with yellow peach, quince like and floral aromas plus a hint of white pepper spice. A nicely textured palate with a slight hint of balanced sweetness is followed by a distinctly chalky, peppery mineral grip to the finish which cleanses the palate beautifully. A really interesting, classy food wine.”

Ben Bolitho, Waimea’s General Manager was naturally delighted, “It was thrill to hear that these three wines had done well in this unique and well-regarded show where our wines are judged alongside food, but to then learn today that we’d won the Chairman’s Trophy for our Waimea Grüner Veltliner was just the icing on the cake!”
